So…in integrating old with new…is there anything shaking up your thinking? What is getting better? What isn’t?

Well, in recent years, the reframing of ‘explicit thinking’ and ‘intentional learning’ to the well-developed work of ‘visible thinking’ and ‘knowledge building’ continue to inspire me a great deal.

What is discouraging is the continued mindless throwing of technology into schools. That didn’t happen at first (in the late 70’s and early 80’s). It happened as the ‘non-using’ bosses took over). I made a comment over here about that. (https://theconstructionzone.wordpress.com/2015/07/06/its-not-about-the-tools-really/)

What has shaken my thinking recently is the realization that the 50s and 60s Skinnerian approach I so desperately dismissed just before I started my career in 1970 actually has come back into my field of view. Not that I am advocating a stimulus-response approach to education, but, we DO have to acknowledge that we are limbic creatures and so much of our day to day, minute to minute behaviour is indeed controlled by that!

So it behooves us to be mindful of that and to get our pre-frontal cortex into the mix at times to throttle that limbic dinosaur so that we don’t do things based on reaction rather than on considered response! 🙂
